Speaking Day 1 and Crazy Socks

Monday 27 October 2025

Students today moved into the third part of our extended unit on communication: we've gone over non-verbal communication (i.e., body language and facial expressions) and active listening. Today we started actually looking at what most kids would have expected first in a unit on communication: speaking.

We're initially looking at how words can have different meanings and the importance of keeping that in mind when talking to someone. The easiest way of doing this is looking at slang terms that have come and gone: words that change their meanings once, twice, or even more times. We went over some classic 80s slang terms (think: grody and bodacious) with students coming up with their own meanings for them. Tomorrow, I'll reveal the actual meanings. It's sure to be groovy. (Had to get a little 60s slang in there as well.)

It was also Crazy Sock Day for Red Ribbon Week, so we took a picture of some of the kiddos' silly socks. (Tomorrow is jersey day: make sure you wear dress-code bottoms, per Mrs. Davis.)

Today's Journal Prompt

What are some popular slang terms you personally use? What’s your favorite slang term now? How do you think your kids will view the slang you used as a kid?

Homework

Do you best to figure out what these three slang terms from the 1950s mean (write it in your journal): greaser, square, bird dog.
