How Our Words Can Express More than We Intend

Wednesday 29 October 2025

Today, we continued our work with communication with a Socratic Seminar about how our words can express more than we intend. We focused on euphemisms specifically focusing on euphemisms that many use in replacement of socially unacceptable words. The goal of the lesson was simply to get students to understand that using a euphemism does not disconnect it from the original word it's replacing.

"Someone might use the euphemism," I explained at the end, "but many people will still hear the unacceptable word."

Today's Journal Prompt

Imagine a new student comes to GPA. Instead of using contemporary slang, she uses 80s slang. She constantly says things like “Gag me with a spoon,” refers to things she doesn’t like as “grody,” suggests that a cute boy is “choice.”
Assuming you had no prior knowledge about these slang terms, how do you think people would view this girl? What would people say about her?
