SMART Goal Setting 1

Wednesday 10 September 2025

Today we took our first steps to creating SMART goals, something we've been reading about and discussing all week.

We went over some examples of poor SMART goals:

  • "I will improve my writing skills by reading more books."
  • "I will get better grades in math this semester."
  • "I will raise my science grade from a C to an A in one week."
  • "I will finish all my homework assignments… eventually."
  • "I will do more studying to improve in English."
  • "I will spend two hours each night studying art history so I can get an A, even though I only need to focus on math and reading for promotion to the next grade."

After making sure everyone understood what could go wrong, we began working on our own smart goals. We'll be finishing them up tomorrow.

Today's Journal Prompt

What do you want to do as an adult? What kind of job would you like to have? Why? What type of job would you definitely not want to have? Why? What would success look like for you?

Homework

Seventh graders: complete your first draft of your SMART goal (on the chart we used today).
Sixth graders: complete the planning portion of the SMART goal chart.

Due date: Thursday 11 September 2025
