Communication: Metaphors

Tuesday 17 February 2026

It's been a while since I updated this site. Apologies for the neglect. I've been spending every waking school-based hour trying to get through 150 journals and give meaningful feedback.

Today we began a new, small communication unit about 21st-century communication: memes. We'll be eventually tying it into leadership principles (and having some silly fun at times in the meantime), but today we laid the foundation by doing a review (probably no more than 20 minutes) of what metaphors are and how they work.

Afterward, we took the day's journal prompt and turned the first part into a metaphor: "I am a ...." For example, if students suggested they were energetic and liked to have fun, a good metaphor would be, "I am a puppy." (Can't use that one in homework -- we already applied it in class.)

Today's Journal Prompt

How would you describe yourself? What kind of person are you?
How would your mother describe you?
How would your best friend describe you?

Homework

Complete the first metaphor: how you see yourself.
